We investigate the isotope effect on the London penetration depth of a superconductor which measures n S /m * , the ratio of superfluid density to effective mass. We use a simplified model of electrons weakly coupled to a single phonon frequency ω E , but assume that the energy gap does not have any isotope effect. Nevertheless, we find an isotope effect for n S /m * which is significant if is sufficiently large that it becomes comparable to ω E , a regime of interest to high-T c cuprate superconductors and possibly other families of unconventional superconductors with relatively high T c. Our model is too simple to describe the cuprates and it gives the wrong sign of the isotope effect when compared with experiment, but it is a proof of principle that the isotope effect exists for n S /m * in materials where the pairing gap and T c are not of phonon origin and have no isotope effect.

Classical Phase Fluctuations in High Temperature Superconductors

Phase fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter play a larger role in the cuprates than in conventional BCS superconductors because of the low superfluid density rs of a doped insulator. In this paper, we analyze an XY model of classical phase fluctuations in the high temperature superconductors using a low temperature expansion and Monte Carlo simulations. In agreement with experimen...

Low Temperature Superfluid Response of High-tc Superconductors

We have reviewed our theoretical and experimental results of the low temperature superfluid response function ρs of high temperature superconductors (HTSC). In clean high-Tc materials the in-plane superfluid density ρ ab s varies linearly with temperature. The slope of this linear T term is found to scale approximately with 1/Tc which, according to the weak coupling BCS theory for a d-wave supe...

کشف ابررسانایی دمای بالا- کشف غیرمنتظره، رفتار نامتعارف

A brief review on some peculiar properties of high temperature superconductors (HTS) is presented. Twenty years after the discovery, it appears more and more clear that the behaviour of this new class of materials is remarkably different from what have been re-classified as “conventional” superconductors. In the following we will focus our attention on the study of two phenomena, namely the J...

Effective theory of high-temperature superconductors.

The field theory of a fluctuating d-wave superconductor is constructed and proposed as an effective description of superconducting cuprates at low energies. The theory is used to resolve a puzzle posed by recent experiments on superfluid density in severely underdoped YBa2(Cu3)O(6+x). In particular, the overall temperature dependence of the superfluid density at low dopings is argued to be desc...

Unified picture of the oxygen isotope effect in cuprate superconductors.

High-temperature superconductivity in cuprates was discovered almost exactly 20 years ago, but a satisfactory theoretical explanation for this phenomenon is still lacking. The isotope effect has played an important role in establishing electron-phonon interaction as the dominant interaction in conventional superconductors. Here we present a unified picture of the oxygen isotope effect in cuprat...
